Eger Day Trip from Budapest: Castle, Wine & Baths

··14 mins
ℹ️
Short answer: Do an Eger day trip by train: direct from Budapest-Keleti every hour on the hour, 1 h 52 min, 2,830 HUF (about €8) each way, no reservation needed. Take the 8:00 (arrives 9:52) and come back on the 19:08 or the last direct train at 20:08. Budget 4,800 HUF for the castle and about 2,000 HUF for a three-wine tasting in the Valley of the Beautiful Women. Tours exist only as private cars from about €242 per person. If the wine is the point, stay the night.

An Eger day trip from Budapest gives you Hungary’s most famous castle, Europe’s northernmost Ottoman minaret and a valley of wine cellars cut into the hillside, all two hours from Keleti. It’s the best wine day trip from Budapest, and one of the easiest: the train is direct, the town is walkable, and nothing needs booking. The only hard part is leaving, because the last direct train goes at 20:08.

This guide gives the 2026 train times from MÁV, the prices for every sight and bath, the cellars’ real opening hours, and a one-day plan that fits them together. For how Eger ranks against the other trips, see our ten best day trips from Budapest.

Is Eger worth a day trip from Budapest?
#

Yes: Eger is worth a day trip from Budapest for anyone interested in castles, baroque towns or wine, and the direct train makes it easy. It’s less rewarding on a Monday in winter, when the museums and many cellars keep short hours. Here’s how the ways of getting there compare:

How do you get from Budapest to Eger by train?

Take the direct AGRIA InterRégió train from Budapest-Keleti (metro M2 and M4), which leaves every hour on the hour and reaches Eger 1 hour 52 minutes later. The 142 km trip costs 2,830 HUF (about €8) one way in second class, and these trains need no seat reservation (jegy.mav.hu).

A same-day return at full fare costs 5,660 HUF. The Magyarország24 nationwide day ticket costs 4,999 HUF and covers the Eger trains, so it’s slightly cheaper for a day trip and also covers Volánbusz buses such as the one to Egerszalók (ujtarifa.hu). You can’t add an IC seat reservation to a county day ticket, but you can to the Magyarország24.

From the station to the centre: Eger’s railway station is about 1.7 km south of Dobó István tér, the main square: roughly 25 minutes on foot along a flat route. The local bus needs a change at the bus station, so walking is simpler.

Works to know about: on the nights of 27/28 and 28/29 October 2026, buses replace trains between Füzesabony and Eger from 21:10 to 5:00. Daytime trains and the 20:08 return aren’t affected (MÁV notice).

By bus: Volánbusz coaches leave from Budapest’s Stadion bus station (next to Puskás Ferenc Stadion, M2). The fastest take about 1 h 40 min to Eger bus station, 600 metres from Dobó tér, for 2,520 HUF, with tickets from the driver. It’s a fine alternative if you’re staying near Stadion; otherwise Keleti is easier.

What can you see in Eger in one day?

In one day in Eger you can see the castle, the minaret, the Basilica and the Lyceum’s camera obscura, and still spend the late afternoon in the wine valley. Everything except the valley is within a ten-minute walk of Dobó István tér.

Eger Castle is where István Dobó’s small garrison held off a far larger Ottoman army in 1552, the story every Hungarian child reads in Géza Gárdonyi’s novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon (Egri csillagok). The ticket covers the castle history exhibition, the Heroes’ Hall, the prison exhibition and daily guided tours. The underground mine galleries can only be seen on a guided tour, and the casemate corridor tour costs 1,000 HUF extra. Allow two hours. Entry is free on 17 October 2026 (Castle Day) and to the exhibitions on 23 October.

A one-day Eger plan
#

  • 8:00 Train from Keleti, arriving 9:52. Walk into town (25 minutes).
  • 10:30 The Lyceum’s camera obscura while the light is good, then the Basilica opposite.
  • 11:45 Eger Castle, with lunch in town afterwards.
  • 14:30 The minaret (before 13:45 from November, so swap it with the castle), then a coffee on Dobó tér.
  • 15:30 Walk or take the tourist train to the Valley of the Beautiful Women.
  • 18:00 Leave the valley for the 19:08. It’s about 4 km back to the station, roughly 50 minutes on foot, so allow an hour, or stay until about 19:00 and catch the last direct train at 20:08.

How do you visit the Valley of the Beautiful Women?
#

The Valley of the Beautiful Women (Szépasszony-völgy) is a horseshoe of more than 150 wine cellars about 2 km west of Dobó István tér, a 20–30 minute walk (Tourinform Eger). You walk in, pick a cellar and order a tasting flight or a glass. There’s no entry fee and no single timetable.

The tourist train (Egri Városi Kisvonat) stops at the valley on a 45–50 minute loop of the town, leaving hourly from 10:00 to 17:00 and costing 2,800 HUF. It runs daily from Easter to the end of the autumn school holiday, so until about 1 November in 2026, and only to order after that (kisvonatok.hu). It’s a sightseeing ride, not a shuttle: walking is quicker.

What a tasting costs, from the cellars’ own price lists in September 2026:

From tothferencpinceszet.hu, ostorosbor.hu and juhaszbrotherswinery.hu.

Opening hours vary cellar by cellar. Tóth Ferenc, for example, is open Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 or 13:00 until 20:00–22:00, and closed on Tuesdays (tothferencpinceszet.hu). Juhász Testvérek asks you to book. On winter weekdays, expect some cellars to be closed; Friday and Saturday are the safe bets.

What to drink: Bikavér and Csillag
#

Egri Bikavér (“Bull’s Blood of Eger”) is the region’s red: a blend of at least four grape varieties built on Kékfrankos, in three tiers, Classicus, Superior and Grand Superior (Eger wine district). The legend says Dobó’s defenders drank it in 1552 and the Turks thought it was bull’s blood; the first written mention is from 1851. Egri Csillag (“Star of Eger”) is its white counterpart, a dry blend of at least four varieties, introduced in 2010. Order one of each and you’ve understood Eger.

If you’d rather taste Hungarian wine without the train, see our Budapest food tours and wine tastings.

Can you visit a thermal bath in Eger?
#

Yes: Eger has two baths in the centre and a famous salt-terrace spring nearby. The catch for day-trippers is the Turkish Bath’s hours.

The 16th-century Turkish Bath is the one to see: an Ottoman dome over a modern wellness area. On a weekday you can only get in from mid-afternoon, which means choosing between the bath and the wine valley. At weekends it opens at 9:00, so you can do both. For how Eger’s baths compare with Budapest’s, see our guide to the best thermal baths in Budapest.

Should you book an Eger tour from Budapest?
#

Only if you’re a small group who wants a driver and a guide: we found no group coach tours to Eger on GetYourGuide in September 2026, only private tours from about €255 per person, each with fewer than 20 reviews. The train costs 2,830 HUF each way. That’s the honest comparison. The best-reviewed private tour is this one:

Eger: Countryside, Culture, and Wine Private Tour

★ 5.0 (17 reviews)

Eight hours with a private guide and a driver, door-to-door from your Budapest address, including a guided tour of the castle and the centre and the castle ticket. The wine tasting in the Valley of the Beautiful Women, other entry fees and meals are extra. Worth it for a couple or a family with limited mobility who want the day planned for them.

Hollókő and Eger Private Tour with Camera Obscura

⏱ 9 hours from €258 per person

Adds Hollókő, the UNESCO-listed village in the Cserhát hills that’s hard to reach by public transport, to Eger’s castle, Basilica, Lyceum library and camera obscura. Only three reviews so far (all 5 stars), so book with that in mind.

Eger Private Tour with Wine Tasting

⏱ 8 hours from €370 per person

The fuller version (4.6 from 7 reviews): transfers, a guide, a five-wine tasting and entry to the castle, Lyceum, minaret and Basilica. Expensive; check the listing for what’s included for lunch.

Verdict: take the train unless you’re three or four people who’d split the cost of a car, or you want Hollókő in the same day. For a half-day wine tour closer to Budapest, the Etyek countryside wine tour with a meal is the better-reviewed option.

When is the best time to visit Eger?
#

The best time to visit Eger is from late spring to October, when the castle keeps long hours, the tourist train runs and the cellars are open every day. Autumn 2026 has the best events:

  • Egri Bikavér festival days: 16–31 October 2026, with tastings in the castle, wine walks on 17–18 and 24–25 October, and a Bikavér cellar tour in the valley on Saturday 24 October (Tourinform Eger).
  • Castle Day: 17 October 2026, free castle entry.
  • Eger Advent: a Christmas market on Dobó István tér from 27 November to 24 December 2026, with an Advent cellar tour in the valley on 12 December.
  • Closures: the castle exhibitions close on 24–25 December and 31 December–1 January; the Archbishop’s Palace closes on 23–25 October and 1 November.

In winter, Eger still works: the Basilica, the castle grounds and the thermal baths stay open, but the minaret closes at 13:45, the castle exhibitions keep shorter hours, and the cellars quieten midweek. Go on a Friday or Saturday. More cold-season ideas are in our Budapest in winter guide.

Should you stay overnight in Eger?
#

Stay overnight if the wine valley is the reason you’re going: the cellars are at their liveliest after dark, and the 20:08 train leaves just as they fill up. Eger hotels are also much cheaper than Budapest’s. These have their own active websites and are easy to find on Booking.com:

  • Hotel Villa Völgy (Tulipánkert utca 5, 4-star): a wellness hotel at the entrance to the Valley of the Beautiful Women. The obvious choice for a cellar evening.
  • Imola Hotel Platán (Csákány utca 7): adults-only, and it hosts dinners with Eger winemakers.
  • Hotel Korona (Tündérpart utca 5, 4-star): a wellness and wine hotel.
  • Imola Udvarház (Tinódi Sebestyén tér 4): a small hotel that Booking.com lists as a “dessert hotel”.

Or search all hotels in Eger. An overnight also turns Eger into the extra day of a 4-day Budapest itinerary.

Who should skip Eger?
#

Skip Eger if you have only two or three days in Budapest: it’s a full day, and the city has more than enough to fill it. If you want a shorter countryside trip, the Danube Bend and Szentendre are under an hour away. Non-drinkers get less from Eger than from Vienna or the Danube Bend, since the valley is half the point. And if you’re visiting on a Monday in winter, pick another day: the Lyceum is closed and the town is at its sleepiest. If you’d rather see another capital, compare a Vienna or Bratislava day trip.

Lake Balaton Day Trip from Budapest: Where to Go

··14 mins
ℹ️ Short answer: The best Lake Balaton day trip from Budapest is Balatonfüred + Tihany on the north shore. Take the direct train from Budapest-Déli (every two hours at :05, 1 h 50 min, about 2,520 HUF/€7 each way), then bus 7355 to Tihany Abbey (3,400 HUF). The last direct train back leaves at 19:02. It’s a summer trip at heart: scheduled boats stop after 25 October 2026, and from November the thermal lake at Hévíz is the better reason to go. A small-group tour from €139 adds Esztergom on the way. Lake Balaton is 77 km long, which is the first thing a Lake Balaton day trip has to deal with: “going to Balaton” can mean a two-hour train to a resort you didn’t want. This guide settles which part of the lake to visit in one day from Budapest, with the autumn 2026 train times from MÁV, boat and ferry dates from BAHART, and ticket prices from the abbey, the palace and the Hévíz lake bath.

10 Best Day Trips from Budapest (Ranked, 2026)

ℹ️ Short answer: The best day trip from Budapest is the Danube Bend (Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom), easiest on a guided tour from about €85. The easiest half day is Szentendre, 39 minutes away on the H5 HÉV. Eger is the best trip for wine, 1 h 52 min by direct train. Vienna works, but it’s a long day: about 2 h 25 min each way from Kelenföld. Low water suspended the Danube Bend boats until 11 October 2026, and only the Szentendre boat is scheduled after that, so plan on road or rail. Most day trips from Budapest are easier than they look, and two of them are harder than the brochures admit. Szentendre is a suburban train ride. Vienna is five hours of trains for six hours in the city. This guide ranks the ten day trips from Budapest worth taking, with 2026 journey times, fares and ticket prices from the operators, what closes in winter, and a clear call on tour versus DIY for each.

Vienna Day Trip from Budapest: Worth It, or Bratislava?

··13 mins
ℹ️ Short answer: Vienna works as a day trip from Budapest, but only with an early train: about 2 h 25 min from Kelenföld (2 h 50 min from Keleti during 2026 works), advance tickets from €13, and the last train back at 21:40. Bratislava is the easier day: 2 h 25 min from Nyugati, from €14, and a small old town you can see without rushing. Doing both in one day is possible by train or on a 12-hour guided tour from €177, but you’ll only skim each. A Vienna day trip from Budapest is worth it if you want one palace, one cathedral and a coffee house, and not worth it if you want Vienna. That’s the honest verdict. You spend about five hours on trains for seven to nine hours in the city. Bratislava, on the other hand, fits into the same day comfortably. This guide gives the 2026 train times and fares from MÁV, a realistic plan for each city, and a clear call on when a tour that does both is worth €177.
