Most day trips from Budapest are easier than they look, and two of them are harder than the brochures admit. Szentendre is a suburban train ride. Vienna is five hours of trains for six hours in the city. This guide ranks the ten day trips from Budapest worth taking, with 2026 journey times, fares and ticket prices from the operators, what closes in winter, and a clear call on tour versus DIY for each.
This is the day-trip section of our 30 best things to do in Budapest. If you’re planning a longer stay, our 4-day Budapest itinerary builds one of these trips in.

Do Budapest travel passes work on day trips?#
No. Budapest travelcards and BKK tickets are valid only up to the city boundary. That catches out a lot of people on the Szentendre HÉV. There are two ways round it:
- Extension ticket: keep your Budapest pass and buy an extension for the section outside the city. For the H5 to Szentendre (Békásmegyer to Szentendre) it’s 450 HUF (about €1).
- Pest Vármegye24 day ticket (999 HUF, about €3): unlimited travel for 24 hours on the HÉV, Volánbusz buses and supplement-free trains in Pest county. It covers Szentendre, Visegrád and Gödöllő, but not Esztergom or Eger, and not Budapest’s metro, trams or buses.
For longer trips, a Magyarország24 ticket (4,999 HUF, about €14) covers the whole country for a day. Compare it with two single fares, and check whether your train needs a supplement, before you buy. Our Budapest public transport guide covers tickets inside the city.
1. Danube Bend: best overall day trip#
The Danube Bend is the best day trip from Budapest: the river loops through wooded hills north of the city, and the three towns on it each do one thing well. Visegrád has the hilltop citadel, Esztergom has Hungary’s largest church, and Szentendre (below) has the pretty old town.
What to see:
- Esztergom Basilica: entry to the church is free. The combined ticket for the dome, treasury and crypt costs 5,600 HUF (about €15), or buy them separately (dome 3,300 HUF). From October to December the church is open 8:00–17:00 and the dome 9:00–16:30 (official prices). The Mária Valéria Bridge next to it crosses into Slovakia.
- Visegrád Citadel (Fellegvár): adult 2,800 HUF (about €8), open 9:00–17:00 in October with shorter hours into winter, and only Friday to Sunday from 12 January to 28 February (parkerdo.hu). The view of the river bend is the reason to come.
- Visegrád Royal Palace: the ruins of a medieval royal palace, open Tuesday to Sunday.
Getting there yourself: trains from Nyugati reach Esztergom in about 65 minutes, every 30 minutes. Bus 880 runs from Újpest-Városkapu (metro M3) through Szentendre and Visegrád to Esztergom in about two hours. You can link all three towns by bus, but it takes the whole day and some careful timetable reading.
Boats: in summer, Mahart boats normally run from Budapest to Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom. In 2026 low water suspended the Danube Bend boats from 13 July to 11 October, and the Visegrád and Esztergom seasons have ended. Only the Szentendre boat is still scheduled: Thursday to Sunday until 25 October, daily 26 October–1 November and at weekends in December, if the water allows. Check mahartpassnave.hu before you go, and see our Danube Bend tour-or-DIY guide for the details.
From Budapest: Danube Bend Day Trip
Visegrád, Esztergom Basilica and Szentendre in nine hours with a guide and lunch, by coach, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The one to book if you want all three towns without the bus timetables. When the boats run (May to September, not Mondays), the return is by river.
The alternative is the Danube Bend & Szentendre tour with lunch (from €109, 9.5 hours, 4.1 from 936 reviews), which offers hotel pickup and more languages.
Verdict: take the tour for Visegrád and Esztergom on a first visit. If you only want one town, go by train to Esztergom or by HÉV to Szentendre. Our Danube Bend and Szentendre guide compares the two approaches in detail.
2. Szentendre: best easy half day#
Szentendre is the easiest day trip from Budapest: 39 minutes on the H5 HÉV from Batthyány tér, with trains about every 20 minutes. It’s a small riverside town of baroque houses, Serbian Orthodox churches, galleries and cafés. The old town is walkable in a morning, and it’s much quieter on weekdays than at weekends.
The big extra is the Hungarian Open-Air Museum (Skanzen) on the town’s edge: whole villages of rebuilt rural houses from across Hungary. Adult tickets cost 4,000 HUF (about €11) in 2026. The main season runs to 25 October (Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00–17:00), with shorter days until 1 November and a few special weekends in November. Then it closes for winter (skanzen.hu).
Tour or DIY? DIY, easily. A Szentendre half-day tour exists (from €70, 4 hours, 4.1 from 379 reviews), but the HÉV costs you 450 HUF on top of a Budapest pass. The tour only makes sense for its guide’s commentary.
3. Eger: best for wine and history#
Eger is the best day trip from Budapest for wine: a baroque town under a famous castle, with dozens of wine cellars cut into the hillside of the Valley of the Beautiful Women (Szépasszony-völgy), home of Egri Bikavér (“Bull’s Blood”). Direct trains leave Keleti every hour and take about 1 hour 52 minutes.
Eger Castle (Dobó István Castle Museum) costs 4,800 HUF (about €13) for adults, covering the grounds and the main exhibitions. The grounds are open 6:00–22:00 and the exhibitions 9:00–18:00 daily until 31 October; winter hours are shorter (egrivar.hu).
The catch is the last train. The last useful direct train back leaves Eger around 20:08, just when the cellars get going. Wine lovers should stay the night: hotels in Eger are much cheaper than in Budapest.
Tour or DIY? DIY. GetYourGuide only has private Eger tours from about €242 per person, with few reviews each. The direct train is simple, and Eger’s centre is walkable. Our Eger day trip guide has the full plan.
4. Gödöllő Royal Palace: best short trip#
Gödöllő Royal Palace is the shortest good day trip from Budapest: the baroque palace that Emperor Franz Joseph and Queen Elisabeth (“Sisi”) used as their Hungarian summer home. It’s 25–43 minutes by train from Keleti, or you can take the HÉV H8 from Örs vezér tere to the Gödöllő, Szabadság tér stop opposite the palace.
The permanent exhibition costs 5,000 HUF (about €14) on weekdays and 5,400 HUF (about €15) at weekends. From April to October it’s open daily, including Mondays, 10:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:00 (kiralyikastely.hu). It’s closed on 1 November and 23–26 December, and winter hours hadn’t been published as of September 2026.
From Budapest: Gödöllő Royal Palace Tour
A three-hour guided trip with transport from Budapest, rated 4.4 from 197 reviews. Worth it only if you’d rather not deal with the train. The palace itself also sells its entry ticket on GetYourGuide from €14, the same as the desk price.
View Tour →Verdict: DIY by train, and pair it with an afternoon back in the city.
5. Vienna: best second capital (but a long day)#
Vienna works as a day trip from Budapest, but only just. Direct Railjet trains run every hour and take about 2 hours 25 minutes from Kelenföld. Until 12 December 2026 the same trains take about 2 hours 50 minutes from Keleti because of track works, so board at Kelenföld (metro M4). The last direct train back leaves Wien Hauptbahnhof at 21:40.
That’s five hours of travel for six to eight hours in Vienna: enough for the Ringstrasse, St Stephen’s Cathedral and one museum or palace, not both. MÁV’s advance “START Europa” fares to Austria start at €13 one way (mavcsoport.hu). They’re tied to one train, so book a comfortable return.
From Budapest: Vienna – Bratislava One Day Trip with a Guide
Two capitals in one 12-hour day with a guide, rated 4.7 from 283 reviews. You’ll see both, but you won’t linger in either. Pick it if ticking off Vienna and Bratislava matters more than time in them.
View Tour →Verdict: go by train, and stay a night if your trip allows it. Our Vienna or Bratislava comparison helps you choose if you only have one day.
6. Lake Balaton: best in summer#
Lake Balaton is Central Europe’s largest lake and Hungary’s summer playground. For a day trip, go to Balatonfüred and the Tihany peninsula on the north shore. Trains from Déli or Kelenföld reach Balatonfüred in about 1 hour 50 minutes.
Tihany Abbey on the peninsula costs 3,400 HUF (about €9). It’s open Monday to Saturday 10:00–17:00 and Sunday from 11:15 in October, with shorter winter hours (tihanyiapatsag.hu). The Tihany–Szántód car ferry runs all year (1,000 HUF for foot passengers). Scheduled BAHART boats stop after 25 October 2026.
Bus 7355 links Balatonfüred with Tihany Abbey in about 12 minutes. Or let a tour solve the connection: the Lake Balaton and Tihany day trip with Esztergom (from €139, 8 hours, small group, 4.6 from 115 reviews) adds the Danube Bend on the way. For Hévíz, the thermal lake at the western end, the train takes about 2 hours 40 minutes to Keszthely: book a night in Hévíz instead of doing it in a day.
Verdict: a summer trip. From November to March the lakeside is shuttered and grey, and Eger or Vienna is the better day. Our Lake Balaton guide compares the towns.
7. Etyek: best wine trip close to Budapest#
Etyek is a wine village about 30 km west of Budapest, the closest real wine region to the city and known for its whites and sparkling wines. Bus 760 runs from Kelenföld station in about 40–45 minutes, but the wineries are spread out and their hours vary, so this is one trip where the tour is simply easier.
Half-Day Countryside Wine Tour with Meal and Transfer
Etyek wineries, tastings and a meal, with transport from Budapest, rated 4.8 from 800 reviews. The easiest wine day out from the city, and back in time for dinner.
View Tour →For wine without leaving the city, see the tastings in our Budapest food tours guide.
8. Bratislava: best easy border crossing#
Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, is 2 hours 25 minutes from Nyugati by direct train, with departures every two hours. MÁV’s advance fares to Bratislava start at €14. The old town is small and walkable, and the hilltop Bratislava Castle costs €14, open 10:00–18:00 and closed on Tuesdays (snm.sk).
Verdict: a pleasant, easy day, but a smaller payoff than Vienna for the same journey time. Pick it if you’ve done Vienna, or combine the two on the tour above.
9. Pannonhalma Archabbey: best for history and a quiet day#
Pannonhalma Archabbey is a thousand-year-old Benedictine monastery on a hilltop in western Hungary, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take the train from Keleti to Győr (about 1 hour 30 minutes), then the local train to Pannonhalma (25–33 minutes). The library, closed in 2025 for a beetle infestation, reopened on 20 January 2026.
Tickets cost 3,200 HUF (about €9), and a cellar tasting of the abbey’s wines starts at 5,000 HUF. Check the days: from September to October it’s open Tuesday to Sunday 9:00–17:00, and from November to February only Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–15:30, with no guided tours (official hours). Combine it with Győr’s baroque centre on the way back.
Tour or DIY? DIY: the GetYourGuide option is a private tour at €320.
10. Puszta horse show: best countryside experience#
A puszta tour takes you to a horse farm on the Great Hungarian Plain south of Budapest to watch the csikós horsemen, the Hungarian cowboys, ride standing on galloping horses. The farms are outside town, so this is a tour-only trip in practice. The full-day puszta tour with lunch and show costs from €113 for 8 hours and is rated 4.6 from 225 reviews.
Verdict: worth it for families and anyone who likes horses. It’s a folklore show rather than a slice of everyday life, and it’s priced accordingly.
Honourable mention: Hollókő. The UNESCO-listed village in the Cserhát hills is free to walk around (castle 3,000 HUF), but only one direct bus runs each way a day: out from Stadion in the morning, back mid-afternoon (holloko.hu). Check the running days before you go.
Which day trips from Budapest work in winter?#
In winter, the best day trips from Budapest are Eger, Vienna, Bratislava, Gödöllő and Esztergom, which all stay open with shorter hours. Outdoor and seasonal trips mostly shut down between November and March:
| Trip | Nov–Mar status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Eger | Open | Shorter castle exhibition hours |
| Vienna / Bratislava | Open | Christmas markets in November and December |
| Gödöllő Royal Palace | Open | Closed 1 Nov and 23–26 Dec; winter hours not yet published |
| Esztergom Basilica | Church open | Dome, treasury and crypt closed about mid-January to end of February (2026 pattern) |
| Visegrád Citadel | Reduced | Friday to Sunday only, 12 Jan–28 Feb |
| Szentendre | Town open | Skanzen closed after mid-November |
| Pannonhalma | Reduced | Tuesday to Saturday only, 10:00–15:30 |
| Lake Balaton | Quiet | Ferry runs, but most lakeside businesses close |
| Danube Bend boats | Mostly not running | Only the Szentendre boat, on December weekends, if the water allows |
Status checked September 2026 on each operator’s official site.
For winter in the city itself, see our guide to Budapest in winter.
Tour or DIY: which is better for day trips from Budapest?#
Doing it yourself is better for Szentendre, Eger, Gödöllő, Vienna, Bratislava and Pannonhalma, all simple rail trips where a tour costs several times the fare. Book a tour for the Danube Bend (three towns that are awkward to link), Etyek (scattered wineries) and the puszta (farms far from any station).
| Choose DIY if… | Choose a tour if… |
|---|---|
| You’re going to one town | You want Visegrád, Esztergom and Szentendre in one day |
| The trip is a direct train (Eger, Vienna, Gödöllő) | The destination has no easy public transport (Etyek, puszta) |
| You want to stay late or overnight | You’d rather not read Hungarian timetables |
| You’re on a budget | You want a guide’s commentary and lunch sorted |
Verdict: take one tour, to the Danube Bend, and do the rest by train. For more guided options, see our list of the best Budapest tours.
Which day trips should you skip?#
- Tokaj as a day trip. It’s a long way east, and GetYourGuide’s private version costs €493. Do a Tokaji tasting in Budapest instead, or stay overnight.
- Hévíz as a day trip. Over 2.5 hours each way by train. It’s lovely as an overnight and exhausting as a day trip.
- Lake Balaton in winter, unless you like empty promenades.
- Vienna from Keleti before 12 December 2026. Go from Kelenföld and save nearly half an hour each way.
FAQ#
What is the best day trip from Budapest?#
The Danube Bend is the best day trip from Budapest: Szentendre, Visegrád castle and Esztergom Basilica in one day along the most scenic stretch of the river. A guided tour is the easiest way to link all three, from about €85 in September 2026. For a short, easy half day, go to Szentendre, 39 minutes away on the H5 suburban train.
Can you do Vienna as a day trip from Budapest?#
Yes, but it is a long day. Direct trains run every hour and take about 2 hours 25 minutes from Kelenföld station, or about 2 hours 50 minutes from Keleti while track works last until 12 December 2026. That leaves roughly six to eight hours in Vienna. If you can, stay a night.
How do you get from Budapest to Szentendre?#
Take the H5 HÉV suburban train from Batthyány tér to Szentendre, which takes about 39 minutes and runs roughly every 20 minutes. Budapest travel passes are valid only to the city boundary, so add a 450 HUF extension ticket or buy a Pest Vármegye24 day ticket for 999 HUF.
Is Szentendre worth a day trip?#
Yes, especially as a half day. The baroque old town, riverside and museums are 39 minutes from central Budapest, and the Hungarian Open-Air Museum (Skanzen) is on its edge. Go on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds, and note that the Skanzen closes for winter after mid-November.
Can you see the Danube Bend without a tour?#
Yes. The H5 HÉV reaches Szentendre, bus 880 continues to Visegrád and Esztergom, and trains run from Nyugati to Esztergom in about 65 minutes. Linking all three towns in one day by public transport is possible but slow, which is why most first-time visitors take a tour.
Are Budapest travel passes valid on day trips?#
No. Budapest passes and BKK tickets are valid only within the city boundary. For Szentendre and Gödöllő, the Pest Vármegye24 day ticket (999 HUF) covers the HÉV, suburban trains and Volánbusz buses in Pest county, but not Budapest metro, trams or buses.
What day trips from Budapest work in winter?#
Eger, Gödöllő, Vienna, Bratislava and Esztergom Basilica all work in winter, with shorter hours. Avoid Szentendre’s open-air museum, which closes after mid-November, and the Danube Bend boats, which run at most to Szentendre on December weekends. Pannonhalma Archabbey opens only Tuesday to Saturday from November to February.
Is Eger worth a day trip from Budapest?#
Yes. Direct trains take about 1 hour 52 minutes, and the castle, the baroque centre and the wine cellars of the Valley of the Beautiful Women fill a day. The last useful train back leaves around 20:08, so wine lovers should stay the night.
Last verified: 16 October 2026. Prices and timetables change, so confirm with the operator before booking.
