Budget hotels in Budapest are easy to find and easy to get wrong. The city has hundreds of cheap beds, but the cheapest listings are often in the wrong part of District VIII, above a bar that closes at 6:00, or under a hostel name that closed years ago. This guide picks the budget hotels and hostels worth booking in 2026, sorted by area and by what you want from the night: sleep, a party, or breakfast thrown in.
We checked every property’s address and status on its own website in September 2026, and every Booking.com link opens the right place. For how the budget areas compare with the rest of the city, start with our guide to where to stay in Budapest.
Some links in this guide are affiliate links. They don’t change your price and help keep the site running.
What is the best area for budget hotels in Budapest?#
The best area for budget hotels in Budapest is District IX (Ferencváros), around Ráday utca and the Great Market Hall: cheap chain hotels and good hostels, 5–15 minutes’ walk from the river and District V. The inner part of District VIII and the outer edge of District VII are the runners-up.
| Area | Best for | Skip if | Price level | Metro |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| District IX (Ferencváros), inner part | Best value overall, quiet nights | You want the ruin bars on your doorstep | €–€€ | M3/M4 Kálvin tér, M4 Fővám tér |
| District VIII, Palace District | Old buildings, quiet streets | You book east of József körút without checking | €–€€ | M3/M4 Kálvin tér, M2 Astoria |
| District VII, outer edge (Rákóczi út, Keleti) | Breakfast-included chain hotels, early trains | You want the river | €–€€ | M2/M4 Keleti, M2 Blaha Lujza tér |
| District VII, party core | Party hostels | You need sleep before 3:00 | € | M2 Astoria |
| District VI (Terézváros) | Big hostels near Andrássy út | You want the river | €–€€ | M1, M3 |
| District V (Belváros) | A few cheap rooms in the centre | Your budget is fixed: it’s the dearest area | €€ | Every line |
| District I (Buda, by Déli station) | Buda on a budget | You plan to go out in Pest | €€ | M2 Déli pályaudvar |
€ = hostel dorms and the cheapest rooms; €€ = 3-star doubles. Areas and transport checked September 2026.
Verdict: stay in inner District IX. Kálvin tér puts two metro lines outside your door, the Great Market Hall is around the corner, and you can walk to the Jewish Quarter’s bars and back without living above them. If you do want to live above them, see our District VII hotel guide.
One thing that isn’t a saving: District IX charges the same 4% tourist tax as the other central districts (ferencvaros.hu). Choose it for the price and the location, not the tax.
How much is a budget hotel or hostel in Budapest?#
A dorm bed in a Budapest hostel cost from about €9–15 for a Tuesday night in mid-October 2026, and a basic 3-star double from about €40. That’s what the cheapest listings on Booking.com showed when we searched on 29 September 2026. Saturdays cost noticeably more, as the table shows:
| Stay (1 night) | Tue 13 Oct 2026 | Sat 17 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest dorm beds (Booking.com hostel filter) | about €9–15 | about €12–25 |
| Cheapest 3-star hotel doubles (2 adults) | from about €40–65 | higher: check live |
| Average Budapest hotel room, all classes (Jan–Jul 2026) | 43,995 HUF (about €121) | n/a |
Booking.com snapshot on 29 September 2026, before the 4% tourist tax. Hotel average from the Hungarian Hotel Association (MSZÉSZ).
That last line is the useful benchmark. The Hungarian Hotel Association puts Budapest’s average gross room rate at 43,995 HUF (about €121) for January to July 2026, and at 47,072 HUF (about €129) for July alone (turizmusonline.hu). Anything well under that in a central district counts as a good deal.
Best budget hotel overall: ibis Budapest Centrum#
Best for: anyone who wants a clean, central room and doesn’t care about character.
ibis Budapest Centrum is a 126-room 3-star at Ráday utca 6, about 50 metres from Kálvin tér, where the M3 and M4 metro lines meet. It has a 24-hour bar and indoor parking. Ráday utca itself is a pedestrianised street of restaurants and cafés, lively in the evening but not a party street.
It wins on location for the price. The Great Market Hall is about five minutes away, the Hungarian National Museum is across the boulevard, and Deák Ferenc tér is two metro stops or a 15-minute walk. The rooms are standard ibis: small, functional and the same as in every other city. That’s the point.
Best budget hotels in Budapest by area#
District IX (Ferencváros)#
- ibis Styles Budapest City (Soroksári út 12, 3-star): 130 rooms with breakfast included, some with Danube views, a tram stop 20 metres away. It’s further out than Ráday utca, near the Palace of Arts (MÜPA). Don’t confuse it with the ibis Styles Budapest Center in District VII.
- Corvin Hotel Budapest Sissi Wing (Angyal utca 31): the 3-star wing of the Corvin Hotel, which also has a 4-star wing and apartments, on a quiet side street near Corvin-negyed (M3). It has a garden, which is rare at this price.
For hostels in District IX, see Maverick Central Market, MEININGER and Flow Spaces below.
All hotels and hostels in District IX (Ferencváros)
Search the whole district when your dates are tight. Stay inside the Grand Boulevard (Ferenc körút) for the walk to the centre: Ráday utca, Lónyay utca and the streets behind the Great Market Hall are the sweet spot.
District VII (Erzsébetváros): outer edge#
District VII’s cheap hotels are mostly on Rákóczi út and near Keleti station, away from the bars:
- ibis Styles Budapest Center (Rákóczi út 58): 130 rooms with breakfast included, in the former Hotel Metropol building, 50 metres from the metro. The best breakfast-included deal in the centre.
- Baross Hotel by Mellow Mood Hotels (Baross tér 15, 3-star): 63 rooms, breakfast included, a minute from Keleti station. Rooms range from singles to two-bedroom apartments.
- Star Hotel by Mellow Mood Hotels (István utca 14, 3-star): 48 rooms on a side street between Keleti and City Park.
- ibis Budapest City (Akácfa utca 1–3, 3-star): 84 small rooms near Blaha Lujza tér, at the Rákóczi út end of Akácfa utca, well away from the bar-lined stretch around Instant-Fogas.
- Danubius Hotel Hungaria City Center (Rákóczi út 88–90): a big 4-star opposite Keleti. Its size means rates are often close to 3-star prices.
District VII: inside the Jewish Quarter#
- ROOMbach Hotel Budapest Center (Rumbach Sebestyén utca 14, 3-star): buffet breakfast, a 24-hour bar and parking (€30 a day, per its own site), next to the Rumbach Street Synagogue. It’s on one of the quieter streets inside the quarter, a block from Gozsdu udvar. Our pick if you want to walk home from the ruin bars.
- Moxy Budapest Downtown (Kazinczy utca 48): Marriott’s design-budget brand opened here in May 2026, with 281 small rooms, check-in at the bar and a rooftop bar. It’s a lot of hotel for the money, and it’s on the loudest street in Budapest.
District VIII (Józsefváros)#
District VIII has a reputation that its inner half no longer deserves. The Palace District (Palotanegyed), between Múzeum körút and József körút, is a grid of quiet 19th-century streets behind the National Museum. The outer half, east of József körút, is where the cheapest listings are and where you should check the map first (see Is District VIII safe? below).
- Eurostars Palazzo Zichy (Lőrinc pap tér 2): not a budget hotel, but a 4-star in an 1899 neo-baroque palace in the Palace District that’s often priced below similar hotels in District V. Worth checking before you settle for a 3-star.
- Impulso Hotel by Mellow Mood Hotels (Népszínház utca 39–41, 4-star): 142 rooms with breakfast included, in outer VIII near tram 4/6 and the M4. Good value if you’re comfortable in a busier, scruffier neighbourhood.
- Atrium Hotel by Mellow Mood Hotels (Csokonai utca 14, 4-star): a smaller hotel near Blaha Lujza tér.
The whole district is on one Booking.com search for District VIII.
District V, VI and Buda#
- Three Corners Hotel Art (Királyi Pál utca 12, District V, 3-star superior): 36 renovated rooms, a breakfast buffet, an honesty bar and a small sauna, a few minutes from Kálvin tér. The cheapest sensible room in District V. For the rest of the district, see our District V hotel guide.
- ibis Styles Budapest Heroes Square (Dózsa György út 106, District VI, 3-star): 139 rooms with breakfast and a garage, near City Park and Heroes’ Square. Not central, but handy for Széchenyi Baths.
- ibis Budapest Castle Hill (Krisztina körút 41–43, District I, 3-star): 150 recently renovated rooms 100 metres from Déli station and the M2. The budget way to stay in Buda.
Verdict: ibis Budapest Centrum for location, ibis Styles Budapest Center for breakfast, ROOMbach for the Jewish Quarter, and Eurostars Palazzo Zichy if a few extra euros buy you a palace.

Best all-round hostel: Maverick Central Market#
Maverick Central Market at Lónyay utca 31 has 4-, 6- and 8-bed dorms (mixed and female-only), ensuite private rooms, a bar and a kitchen, and runs pub crawls for anyone who wants one. It’s in the same District IX sweet spot as the ibis Centrum: a quiet street, two metro lines nearby, and a walk or a short metro ride to the bars. On our 29 September snapshot, its 8-bed dorm was among the cheapest beds in the city (about €13 for 13 October).
Best party hostel: The Hive#
The Hive Party Hostel at Dob utca 19 has 304 beds, a guest-only rooftop bar, its own club, pub crawls four nights a week and boat parties on Friday and Saturday nights. It’s strictly 18+. Nobody books The Hive by accident, and nobody should book it for sleep.
For a smaller party hostel, Carpe Noctem (Szobi utca 5, District VI) has been running pub crawls and karaoke nights since 2008. Book it on its own website. And for the bars themselves, see our ruin bars guide.
Best hostel for meeting people: Onefam#
Onefam Budapest (Rumbach Sebestyén utca 6, formerly Hostel One) is built around a nightly “family dinner” followed by a group night out, plus daytime outings and game nights. It has dorms only, with curtained pod beds and female dorms. It’s the best choice for solo travellers who don’t want to eat alone. Avenue Hostel (Aradi utca 8, District VI) is the calmer alternative, with free breakfast and dinners according to its own site.
Best big hostel for sleep: Wombat’s#
Wombat’s City Hostel Budapest at Király utca 20 is the biggest hostel in town, in a converted former hotel, with ensuite, air-conditioned rooms throughout. It offers social dorms, quiet dorms with free earplugs, female-only dorms and private rooms, plus a bar and a guest kitchen. Its own FAQ sets a minimum age of 18 with no upper limit, and caps stays at seven nights in any 30 days.
Best quiet and female-friendly hostels#
- MEININGER Budapest Great Market Hall (Csarnok tér 2, IX): 184 rooms, all ensuite, dorms of up to six beds (female or mixed, 18+ only), private and family rooms, a guest kitchen. More hotel than hostel.
- Mustache Hostel (Krúdy utca 12, VIII): 4- and 8-bed dorms and doubles in a listed 1910 Art Nouveau building in the Palace District, with a full kitchen and laundry. The best hostel in District VIII.
- Flow Spaces (Gönczy Pál utca 2, IX): the former Flow Hostel, with ensuite dorms and private rooms behind the Great Market Hall. Its 8-bed dorm was among the cheapest beds we saw for 13 October (about €9).
- Maverick Athenaeum (Rákóczi út 54, VII): the group’s biggest hostel, with several female dorms including an ensuite one. On a main road, but away from the bars.
Private room on a hostel budget: Maverick Downtown (Ferenciek tere 2, District V) has private rooms only, from doubles to 6-bed rooms, in a Habsburg-era mansion by Elisabeth Bridge. Lavender Circus (Múzeum körút 37, District V) does ensuite doubles and studios in a vintage-styled building.
Verdict: Maverick Central Market for most people, The Hive for the party, Onefam for company, and MEININGER or Wombat’s quiet dorms if sleep matters most.
Is District VIII in Budapest safe to stay in?#
The inner part of District VIII, the Palace District, is quiet and fine to stay in; the trouble spots are on the outer, eastern side. The district’s 2025 police report counted 4,047 registered crimes, down from 4,234 in 2024, and named Blaha Lujza tér, Rákóczi tér, Mátyás tér, Kálvária tér and Teleki tér as the places police focus on (Józsefváros Újság, June 2026).
In practice: book inside József körút (the Palace District) without a second thought, and check the map before booking a cheap room near Mátyás tér or Kálvária tér. Across the city, the UK government’s travel advice warns about pickpockets on busy transport, bars that overcharge tourists and drink spiking, which apply in every district.
Skip these: closed or renamed hostels#
Many “best hostels in Budapest” lists are out of date. As of September 2026:
- Closed: Retox Party Hostel, Home Made Hostel and Grandio Party Hostel. Casa de la Musica’s and Unity Hostel’s official websites now redirect to unrelated sites, so we’ve left them out.
- Renamed: Hostel One is now Onefam; Maverick City Lodge is now Maverick Budapest Soho; Netizen Budapest Centre is now Maverick Athenaeum; Flow Hostel is now Flow Spaces; Novotel Budapest Centrum is now the upscale Mövenpick Hotel Budapest Centre (no longer a budget option).
- Not in Budapest: Generator has no Budapest hostel, despite what some lists imply.
- Couldn’t verify: Goat Hostel, Vitae Hostel and the Adagio hostels have no working official website we could check, so they aren’t listed.
Practical info: tax, night transport and apartments#
Tourist tax: Districts I, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and XIII charge 4% of the room price per night, as of September 2026 (Józsefváros, Ferencváros). District IX exempts under-18s. It’s usually added at the desk, so it may not be in the price you saw online.
Getting home at night: tram 6 runs all night along the Grand Boulevard, the only tram that does (BKK night services). The M4 runs until about 00:04 on weekdays and 01:04 at weekends from Kálvin tér, and the night-bus network was reorganised in July 2026, so check routes in the BudapestGO app rather than an old map. For tickets and passes, see our Budapest public transport guide.
From the airport: the 100E Airport Express stops at Kálvin tér, next to the ibis Centrum and a short walk from the District IX hostels. See how to get from the airport to the city centre.
Apartments: District VI has banned new short-term rentals since 1 January 2026, and the Hungarian statistics office links part of Budapest’s 2026 fall in foreign guests to that ban (KSH, May 2026). An apartment listing in District VI that looks new is a red flag. Hotels and hostels aren’t affected.
Planning your budget: the hotel is usually the biggest cost of a trip. Our Budapest trip cost guide puts it next to baths, sights and food, and our 3-day itinerary works from any of the areas above.
Who should skip budget hotels in Budapest?#
Skip the cheapest end if you’re in Budapest for two nights and want to spend them on the river: a mid-range room in District V on a weekday can cost less than you’d think, so compare before you decide. Families with young children should skip the party hostels entirely (The Hive and MEININGER’s dorms are 18+) and look at breakfast-included family rooms at ibis Styles or JO&JOE instead. And if you want a spa, no budget hotel here has one. See our Budapest spa hotels guide.

On 29 September 2026, the cheapest dorm beds on Booking.com cost about 9 to 15 euros for a Tuesday night in mid-October and about 12 to 25 euros for a Saturday. Private hostel rooms and summer weekends cost more. The 4 percent tourist tax is usually added on top.
Are hostels in Budapest safe?#
The established Budapest hostels are generally safe: the ones in this guide have lockers, key-card or staffed entry, and most have female-only dorms. The usual risks are theft in crowded bars and on public transport, and bars that overcharge tourists, so use the locker and check the bill.
Is District VIII in Budapest safe to stay in?#
The inner part of District VIII, the Palace District between Múzeum körút and József körút, is quiet and fine to stay in. The district’s own 2025 police report names Blaha Lujza tér, Mátyás tér, Kálvária tér and Teleki tér as its trouble spots, all on the outer, eastern side, so check where a cheap hotel is before booking.
Is there a tourist tax in Budapest?#
Yes. The central districts I, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and XIII charge a tourist tax of 4 percent of the room price per night, as of September 2026. District IX exempts guests under 18. Hotels and hostels usually add it at check-in or check-out.
What is the best party hostel in Budapest?#
The Hive Party Hostel on Dob utca in District VII is the best party hostel in Budapest: it has a guest-only rooftop bar, its own club, pub crawls and boat parties, and it is strictly 18+. Onefam is the more sociable, family-dinner alternative, and Carpe Noctem is the small, long-running party option.
Do Budapest hostels have age limits?#
Some do. The Hive is strictly 18+, MEININGER’s dorms are 18+, and Wombat’s has a minimum age of 18 with no upper limit (under-18s only in a private room with a guardian). Wombat’s also caps stays at 7 nights in any 30 days. Check the hostel’s own rules before booking.
